Halloween

Guess who

Can you guess who we are?

So I almost forgot how to post entries, it's been that long since I updated our site. Anyway, Halloween was fun. We started the holiday off with a FSC party at John and Marci's place where our awesome costumes won the coveted First Place in the contest. Minor wardrobe malfunctions and such aside, we had a great time. My favorite costumes were Collin Finnerty and the unnamed stripper/dancer from the Duke lacrosse party. Also present were a skeletonized Nicole Richie, an Islamic extremist, Bender and Leila from Futurama, Flava-Flav, and a couple of Red-Hatters.

A few nights later, we headed out to Chapel Hill for the Franklin Street craziness. A fellow BME student was hosting a party within walking distance to Franklin, and we met up with a bunch of BME and associated friends there. I was really impressed with most of the costumes at the party and on Franklin. Notably present were: Kim Jong Il, Mario Luigi and the Princess from Mario Bros, Princess Zelda and Link from Zelda, a bunch of giraffes, Michelangelo from TMNT, Mike Tyson, the intercom from Charlie's Angels, and us.

CH Party

After partying a bit, we headed to Franklin Street to take everything in. The police blockaded the street around 9 pm and opened it up to pedestrians. This was a good thing, because thousands of costume-clad folks flooded the street to see and be seen. Some of the costumes blew me away, and I tried to take as many pictures as I could. There were several great groups of people dressed to complement each other, like a set of Crayola Crayons, a waddle of Marching Penguins, Frylock Meatwad and Master Shake from ATHF, Thing 1 Thing 2 and the Cat in the Hat, and a set of kitchen appliances. The best single person costumes were Mystique from X-Men, a seven-foot phallus, and a one-night stand. There were tons of people who came sans-costume, just to watch. Even couples in their seventies and families with toddlers came out to see what all the fuss was about.

As you can tell, we took a bunch of pictures, so check them out. And if you weren't able to guess who we are in the costumes, take a look at Indiana Jones: Temple of Doom.

Counting Crows and Goo Goo Dolls

The Counting Crows with the Goo Goo Dolls came to town and played a great show at Alltel Pavillion in South Raleigh. I found out about it some time near the beginning of summer, so I was able to get tickets with several friends.

A little about the venue:
Alltel Pavillion has a deal called a family four-pack where you pay a little extra for their lawn seats, but the ticket includes free parking, four $10 food vouchers and four lawn chair rentals. It works out to be a pretty good deal, especially if you don't want to pay $15 per car for parking. They also don't let you bring in your own lawn chairs if the seat is more than 9 inches off the ground. You can bring in unopened water bottles and cameras which don't have detachable lenses. This was a point of question with my camera. The security guy thought it looked too fancy, but I assured him the lense wasn't removable, and I was ok. Beers are expensive. I think a $9 24-oz miller light was about the best deal there. They say no alcohol in the parking lots, but we saw tons of smart fans pre-partying and tailgating there before the concert.

The Goo Goo Dolls played a good act. I remeber they played Name, Iris, and Broadway, but I didn't write out the set list.

The Counting Crows played really well. Their set list was:
Anna Begins
Hard Candy
Omaha
Catapult
Colorblind
Yellow Taxi
Miami
Perfect Blue Buildings
Time and Time Again
Long December
Hangin Around
-Encore-
Mr Jones
A Murder of One
Holiday in Spain

They set up video screens like most bands do now, with stylized video suiting the songs they played. They also showed a closeup of the stage so people on the lawn could see the band better. Apparently, they're collecting canned food to give to the hungry at the show this tour, but we hadn't heard anything about it. If you're going to see them play this tour, you can probably still bring something.

Michelle's Grad Party

Erika, Michelle, Rita

This weekend we drove out to Knoxville to celebrate our good friend Michelle Allen's graduation. She just finished her masters degree and rightfully wanted to celebrate a bit. Several of her friends nearby organized a party at a neighborhood's clubhouse in way-west Knoxville. It was a lot of fun and around 20-30 people showed up. We took some pictures of all the fun.

Seis de Mayo

Pinata
Saturday evening I headed over to Adam and Kristin's house for the FSC semester-end "Seis de Mayo / Derby" party. It was a lot of fun. Tri had prepared pinatas decorated like UNC and Duke which we took turns pummeling with an NCSU red bat. I posted a bunch of pictures of all the fun.

Durham Bulls

Big Bull

We drove out to the Durham baseball park to see a minor league game Thursday night with several friends. The Bulls lost, but we still had fun and took some pictures. Once in a while, the park does a "dollar dog night" where concessions are pretty cheap. No luck on beer though, that stays normal price. As we walked into the stadium, a guest services guy asked if we were in school. After a short conversation, he talked me, Tri, and Phil into running a relay race around the field against two other teams from UNC and Duke. Since I had run track in highschool, I took the anchor leg, with Phil and Tri before me. We didn't win, but it was still fun. The winning team got some Bulls t-shirts. They also took our picture, so it might be out there somewhere.

Baby party

cake

Sunday afternoon (before the Superbowl) we hosted a small baby party for our friends Ruwan and Shantha Sumanasinghe who are expecting soon. We had a good time and took several pictures. Erika made a nice lemon layer cake and a citrus punch and everybody else brought something too. It's funny how hosting little parties like this give us a great reason to keep the house clean.
